OSLO® Leading Lens Design Software
OSLO (Optics Software for Layout and Optimization) is a powerful optics design software program with the scope needed to meet today’s optics requirements. In addition to classical lens design features, OSLO combines advanced ray tracing, analysis, and optimization methods with a high speed macro language to solve a wide variety of new problems in optics design . What Does OSLO Do?
OSLO is primarily an optical design software package used in lens design to determine the optimal sizes and shapes of the components in optics systems. OSLO has the capability of modeling a wide range of reflective, refractive and diffractive components. In addition, OSLO is used to simulate and analyze the performance of optics systems. With OSLO’s CCL programming language, you can develop specialized optics optics and lens design software tools for modeling , testing, and manufacturing optics systems .
OSLO provides an integrated optical design software environment that helps you complete almost any task in contemporary optics design. More than a lens design software , OSLO also provides advanced tools for designing medical instrumentation, illuminations systems and telescommunications equipment, to name typical applications.
Why is OSLO the Technology Leader?
OSLO was the first optical design software to demonstrate the serious optics and lens design could be carried out using desktop computers. Today, OSLO has been accepted as a practical tool by companies throughtout the the world that use it to create better, lower-cost designs and manufacture them more efficiently. But optics design today goes far beyond the range of problems handled in the past. Now, optics systems are integrated with electronics and image processing software, which creates new deisgn alternatives. And OSLO’s technological leadership in optics and lens design software is more valuable today than ever before.
Are There Different Editions of OSLO?
OSLO lens design software is available in three levels called OSLO Premium , OSLO Standard and OSLO Light . The features in each edition is a subset of the features found in the next highest edition. Each edition is a full-featured program that can help you design superior systems. A free edition (OSLO-EDU) is available limited to 10 surfaces.
OSLO EDU
OSLO-EDU is a free Windows program with a reduced number of features compared to OSLO Light. Please see Differences Between the EDU and Light Editions of OSLO for a detailed comparison. It also restricts you to working with systems that have up to, or including, 10 surfaces. Although OSLO-EDU does not include all the capabilities of OSLO Light, Standard or Premium, it does give you optical design power that exceeds many commercial programs. OSLO-EDU gives you the basic ability to lay out, edit, optimize, analyze, tolerance, and save a wide range of optical systems. OSLO-EDU is perfectly tailored for educational use.

Documentation
Documentation for the commands in OSLO is provided primarily through its on-line help system. The OSLO User Guide provides a step-by-step introduction for the novice OSLO user or for those new to optical design. You can also download the OSLO Optics Reference, which is a combination of an introductory guide to the OSLO program as well as a general reference for optical analysis in optical design and engineering. While particularly useful in learning OSLO, anyone interested in optical design will find the OSLO Optics Reference full of valuable information.

OSLO-EDU System Requirements
You can use OSLO on a PC with an Intel Pentium Processor (or better) running Microsoft Windows 2000, XP or Vista. For good performance, you should have 128MB of RAM for Windows 2000/XP, 1 GB of RAM for Windows Vista.
Linux
You can use OSLO on a PC with an Intel Pentium Processor (or better) running Linux. OSLO is nominally built on RedHat 8.0 using OpenMotif. For good performance, you should have 64MB of RAM. The display should be set for 16 or 24 bit color with a resolution of 1024×768 recommended. You should also have a CD-ROM (for program installation) and at least 40 Mbytes or available disk storage.
Installing OSLO-EDU
To install OSLO-EDU, simply run the OSLO EDU installation program, and follow the prompts displayed by the Setup program. Installation is automatic and will take a few minutes to copy and expand the program files.
Read-Only Files
During installation, the setup program will mark files in the OSLO PUBLIC directory as Read Only. Only LEN (lens), CCL and database files maintained by Lambda Research will be affected. These files are likely to be overwritten upon subsequent OSLO updates.
